How California taxes a car purchase
- Trade-in: California taxes the full selling price; the trade-in allowance is not deducted (dealer and private).
- Private sale: Use tax on the total purchase price (cash, assumed loans, fair market value of property or services traded) paid at DMV registration.
- Bought in another state: A vehicle bought outside California and brought in within 12 months of purchase is presumed bought for use in California (use tax due) if bought by a California resident, subject to CA registration in the first 12 months, or (nonresident buyer) used/stored in CA more than half the time. Credit is allowed for sales/use tax paid to another state.
- Local tax: Rate is the one in effect at the address where the vehicle is registered. data/local/CA.json lists the CDTFA total rate (state 7.25% + district taxes) per incorporated city and per county unincorporated area, effective October 1, 2026; it REPLACES the 7.25% component rather than adding to it. District add-ons range 0.10%-2.00% each.
Exemptions (check the official rule before relying on one)
- Family transaction: Buying from a qualifying family member who is not a vehicle dealer: no use tax.
- Involuntary transfers: Court order, divorce property settlement, inheritance, repossession of a vehicle you sold.
- Active duty military transferred to California: Only if bought and delivered outside CA before receiving transfer orders.
Dealer fees
Doc, processing and prep fees are set by the dealer, not the state. California sets a maximum documentary fee of $85.00 ($70.00 for some dealers). Document processing charge cap: $85 for dealers that are DMV private industry partners (most dealers), $70 for dealers that are not. Must not be represented as a government fee.
