How Georgia taxes a car purchase
- Trade-in: Dealer transactions only; no trade-in credit in private sales. A leased vehicle turned in gets no trade-in credit.
- Private sale: Fair market value from the state motor vehicle assessment manual (the DOR TAVT Estimator shows it), not the sale price.
- Bought in another state: Georgia residents titling a car bought out of state pay TAVT at the County Tag Office where they live. No DOR page found stating a credit for sales tax paid to another state (see flags). Out-of-state buyers who title elsewhere pay no Georgia TAVT.
- Local tax: TAVT is a single combined state and local rate; there is no separate county add-on for titled vehicles. Sales tax applies only to non-titled vehicles and TAVT-exempt cases.
Exemptions (check the official rule before relying on one)
- Certain veterans: 100% disabled veterans, former POWs, Purple Heart and Medal of Honor recipients may be exempt (Form MV-30).
- Public safety first responders: Qualifying injured/killed first responders (or surviving spouse) get a TAVT exemption on up to $50,000 FMV over three years.
- Nonresident military: Nonresident service members stationed in Georgia may be TAVT-exempt (Form PT-472NS) but may owe sales tax on dealer purchases.
Dealer fees
Doc, processing and prep fees are set by the dealer, not the state. No dealer doc-fee cap found on official Georgia pages. Doc fees are part of the retail selling price, so they are subject to TAVT.
