Why our numbers are estimates
Every figure on CarTax is quoted from an official source, but the DMV or county calculates the final amount. Here is why a real bill can differ:
- Local rates: many states add a county or city rate. Without your location we show the range across the state.
- Details we don't ask: weight, horsepower, MPG or district can change a fee; we show a range instead of guessing.
- Lines you fill in: county property taxes, wheel taxes and some county fees have no official statewide table, so they are left for you to fill in and kept out of the total.
- Rules that change: local rates change each quarter or year and fees are indexed; every source has a checked date and we re-check monthly.
- Exemptions: we describe them with the official wording but never apply them for you.
- The final amount: your DMV, tax office or county calculates it, sometimes with values (for example a state's own vehicle value) we can't see.
FAQ
How accurate are the figures?
Each number is checked against the cached official page at every build; the build stops if a quoted figure is missing. See methods.

Estimates of government taxes and fees from official sources; your DMV or county calculates the final amount; not tax or legal advice. Every figure is taken from an official state page (quoted and dated in the sources) and can change. Dealer-set fees are not government fees. Exemptions are described, never applied for you: check the official rule and form.
