How New Jersey taxes a car purchase
- Trade-in: Only when trading a motor vehicle to a registered dealer that takes it for resale, with the purchase and trade signed at the same time. Several trade-ins are allowed. No trade-in credit in private sales. Manufacturer rebates do NOT reduce the taxable price; dealer discounts do.
- Private sale: Tax is on the actual purchase price, paid at the MVC agency at titling. If the price is below the NADA value, the Division of Taxation's Casual Sales Unit may send a notice and assess tax on the NADA value unless you prove the price (bill of sale, Seller's Affidavit, repair bills).
- Bought in another state: NJ residents buying out of state owe NJ use tax, less a credit for sales tax paid to the other state (if that state gives NJ a similar credit). No credit for tax paid to a foreign country, or when the out-of-state purchase is delivered into NJ.
- Local tax: One statewide rate on motor vehicles; no county or city add-on.
Exemptions (check the official rule before relying on one)
- Disabled veterans (VA-funded purchase): The amount paid with VA/NJDVA funds is exempt; any out-of-pocket amount is taxable.
- Resident service members stationed out of state: Tax may be deferred (Form MD-1) until the vehicle is brought into NJ.
- Nonresidents: Nonresident purchasers with no NJ place of abode are exempt with Form ST-10.
- Zero-emission vehicles (exemption ended): ZEV exemption repealed: 3.3125% from Oct 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025; full 6.625% from July 1, 2025.
- Insurance total loss: No credit for tax paid on a totalled car when buying a replacement.
Dealer fees
Doc, processing and prep fees are set by the dealer, not the state. No dollar cap found in official sources. Dealer documentary fees are optional dealer charges, not State fees, and are subject to sales tax.
