FAQ
Which lines on a dealer quote are government charges?
Sales or use tax, title, registration, plates and any state or county fees. Doc, processing, prep and add-on fees are set by the dealer, not the state.
Which states cap dealer doc fees?
In our 16 states, a dollar maximum is in the official sources for California ($85.00), Missouri ($620.79), New York ($175.00), Ohio ($398.00), Pennsylvania ($490.00), Washington ($200.00). Texas lets dealers charge up to $225 without filing a cost analysis. Doc fees by state.
What if the dealer's tax line is higher than your estimate?
Ask how it was worked out: a different local rate, taxable dealer fees or a rule we can't see are common reasons. Your DMV or county calculates the final amount.
Estimates of government taxes and fees from official sources; your DMV or county calculates the final amount; not tax or legal advice. Every figure is taken from an official state page (quoted and dated in the sources) and can change. Dealer-set fees are not government fees. Exemptions are described, never applied for you: check the official rule and form.
